Vancouver artist Vincent Trasov ran for mayor as Mr Peanut in the 1974 civic election. William Burroughs happened to be in town and endorsed Mr Peanut’s candidacy:

Since the inexorable logic of reality has created nothing but insoluble problems, it is now time for illusion to take over. And there can be only one illogical candidate: Mr. Peanut.
